Delphi Tragedy

On February 13, 2017, Liberty German, age 14, and Abigail Williams, age 13, were hiking on the Delphi Historic Trail near the Monon High Bridge just east of Delphi in Carroll County, Indiana. Liberty and Abigail were reported missing to police after their parents were unable to locate them at the pick-up location. Volunteers subsequently discovered the girls’ bodies in the woods east of Delphi in Carroll County, Indiana, on February 14, 2017.

Investigators have distributed a photo (shown above) of a person observed on the Delphi Historic Trail. The photo appears to depict a White male wearing blue jeans, a blue coat/jacket, and a hoodie. During the course of the investigation, evidence has led investigators to believe the aforementioned person is suspected of being involved in the murders of Liberty German and Abigail Williams.

News or Sensationalism - Murray Disappearance Community Leads to Ethics Discussion

Trying to decipher someone’s motivation can lead down a slippery slope of judgement and eventually distraction. The ultimate goal of any of the crime community content creators should be to being attention on a certain case that maybe has gone cold, or is in need of fresh optics. More attention potentially could turn into the one lead investigators need to help bring justice and closure to grieving loved ones.

When the line starts to blur is content created just for views. We all know who and what they are, I’m not calling them out or trashing them. They also serve a purpose in the community, again help bring attention to cases that would most likely go unnoticed. Five years ago, it was one of those videos “10 most mysterious missing person cases” that lead me to discovering Maura’s story. But the dirty evolution of media and content in that vein are the ones who dig deep and publish stories and videos without concrete evidence and hearsay. That is extremely dangerous. Unfounded rumors very easily become “internet fact” more often than not. That in turn leads to more time spend chasing phantoms than actual fact.

Unfortunately in Maura’s situation, there have been two camps set up and an unfortunate line in the sand. I am not speaking for everyone, but there seems to be a group set up around the family, and a group set up around author James Renner and Podcasters Tim Pilleri and Lance Reenstioerna. In 2016 Renner published True Crime Addict: How I lost myself in the mysterious Disappearance of Maura Murray within did make assumptions that upset the Murray family mixing in research Renner started in 2011 with his personal experience and the cost to his personal life. The book has placed Renner at odds with the family and with his continuing blog posts focusing on calling out the Murry’s associates.

Podcast hosts Tim and Lance of the “Missing” podcasts are also polarizing figures in the community. With almost 150 episodes in the series, they have become a wealth of information. James Renner has been a guest on several of the episodes and tend to be “roped” into the Team Renner camp, even though I personally believe that Tim and Lance have a firm understanding of the ethics and they have done many things in regard to not only finding leads on Maura’s case, but to help bring light to other cases as well. That’s not to say that Mr. Renner does not understand ethics, im not here to judge the person. But what I can say is that the fractured community has spent a lot of time talking about the people who present the case than the case itself.

Honestly, I will not comment on what I believe another person’s intentions are. Although I can share my own personal beliefs on ethics in this community. Anyone who steps up to the mic, or sits down behind a keyboard to present information has a responsibility to understand the effect to the cause. A clear line in the sand between fact, speculation and sensationalism. It is very easy to get caught up on the mystery, to plunge down a rabbit hole, to feel you have the hot new information. Just keep in mind, there is reality, a true flesh and blood person behind the headline. Someone who was loved, who had close friends, hopes, dreams and fears. They are more than words on a page, or a click on a twelve minute video. That should be something we can all relate to.
